Its an indication that your job or business has taken mora energy that you have available to give and that your brain is signaling that things are out of whack, explains career coach Melissa Brown. Normally our weekends and vacations offer us enough space to feel refreshed and ready to take on challenges at work. But if youve recently taken a vacation, and instantly felt depleted upon returning to work, burnout may be to blame.Here, some strong indicators youre speeding toward career burnout - and what to do about it.1. Your Sunday scaries are intenseEven for folks who landed their dream gigs right out of college (lucky fools), sometimes going to work seems, well, bleh. Though its normal to want mora time to play than to work, if you boil over with stress and anxiety on Sunday night because you have to report to work in the A.M., your career burnout might be in full swing, according to Brown.Maybe its due to a change in upper management or a shift in your personal life t hat has you interested in other industries or ways of living and working, but this continued sense of dread means its time to seek different opportunities.Sometimes cutting the cord and leaving your current job might be the best solution for you, but if youre not ready for something completely new, try to find a new project at work that excites you. And dont forget that theres more to life than just your job - perhaps a passion project in your free time can help lift your energy and make your time at work more inspired, lead career and business coach at Rowan Coaching, Louisa Shepard says. Either way, my advice is to follow your joy, whether that means finding new opportunities in your current role, or looking for them elsewhere.2. Youre skipping meals and avoiding working outWhen a quick glance at your overbooked Google calendar is enough to make your heart race, the last thing you want to do is sprint it out on a treadmill. Feeling strapped for time during a busy week or month is an experience all professionals have, but if you feel so limited by the number of hours in a day that you arent eating or working out, its time to reconsider. As Brown notes, this means youre 100% prioritizing your work over your physical health and over time, your body will pay the price.To overcome this, Brown suggests scheduling self-care much like you would a sales meeting, a product marketing call or a check-in with your assistant. Youll feel better at work and consequently, do better work, if your physical health is taken care of. People say healthy body, healthy mind for a reason. But if you have to set an alarm to remind yourself to eat, do that, she suggests.Its also recommended to skip out on some of the post-work social events that could be overloading your evenings unnecessarily. Though making an appearance at some corporate happy hours is often seen as a plus to managers, if the bro culture has get-togethers nightly, you shouldnt feel pressured to attend them all and as Brown says, youll perform stronger if youre reenergized than constantly sleepy at your cubicle.If you have to pass on the glass of wine after a long, stressful day so that you can wake up an hour early to get a workout in, know that itll make you feel better in the long-run. You find simple tasks difficultIf you used to zip through your morning routine of answering emails, pulling reports, and scheduling calls without a second thought, and now you procrastinate every click of the mouse, you might be growing increasingly unhappy at your job. This is when Brown says to dig a little deeper and determine your motivations - or rather, lack of.If you feel resistance towards your to-dos and procrastinate heavily, its probably because you lack motivation to do the things you have to do. When youre motivated, you can do the impossible. When youre unmotivated, youll do just enough to get by. If youre be coming more and more unmotivated at work, its likely that the reward - whether monetary or intrinsic - is not worth the cost, she says.Though it might seem elementary, Brown suggests taking 30 minutes to write down (or okay, type out), the kinds of tasks youre currently doing. Then, in another column, write down the kind of tasks that used to get you excited. Now presents your challenge how do you incorporate what you love into your job description.This might mean talking to your boss about taking on personal projects or switching departments. It might seem like youre adding work, but if its the kind of work you like, itll make your overall job situation a more positive one. You dont like the person youre becomingPart of the perk of having trusted and true friends is their undying commitment to stand by you through the many seasons of your life. Thats why when your best friend ra ises concern of your mental state and your attitude toward life as a whole, you might need to do some soul searching to analyze if you like the person youve become lately. A clear indicator of career burnout, according to Shepard, is when your gig makes you someone youre not.If you know that you value something like authenticity but your work wont allow you the space to be yourself, youre going to exhaust your energy stores simply trying to show up in a way thats misaligned with who you are, Shepard says. Take stock of whats important to you and see if your job aligns with the things that you value. Many people are simply stressed because theyre spending the better part of the day trying to suppress who they really are and what they really want out of a career in favor of whats safe, whats acceptable, or what others expect of them.To do this, Shepard says to take a weekend away (or a staycation, if your budget doesnt allow) to honestly identify the things that make you fru chtwein happy and most fulfilled. Employees arent necessarily aya how to ask for their employers to address that gap. There is an issue of employees needing additional training, additional resources, additional support and theyre not a hundred percent sure how to ask for it.Employers need to step upThe responsibility, he says, lies with the employers. I think its incumbent upon the employers to take responsibility for the dynamic and to provide comprehensive learning an d development for employees, Schwarzberg said. He suggests that employers reach out to employers to proactively find out and uncover what additional services and needs there are by conducting research and internal studies, for example.In the report, it was found that 51% of employers dont offer soft skills training. And while 33% of employees say they have had training on technology skills, only 17% say theyve had management skills training.When looking for a new job, candidates should be explicitly asking prospective employers about what training they offer employees.Thats one thing that employees should frankly feel very comfortable asking their prospective employer, Schwarzberg told Ladders. The question can be asked directly What are they doing currently to invest in their employees? Its OK to make it an open-ended question because they more pointed employees make it, the easier it is on the employer to speak to the direct question asked versus speaking generally.Other questions could be, What are you currently doing right now to address development, to address training, learning, and development needs? and What practices are in place currently?If an employer spent a little time getting to know each candidate and their strengths and weaknesses, it would be a step in the right direction, said Schwarzberg. Or youve decided, now that the economy is starting to pick up, youll see what opportunities are out there. Have you wondered if hiring a career coach, a resume writer, a career consultant, or an interview coach could help you? Here are a few misconceptions that come along with hiring someone to improve your job search: 1. Assuming you dont have to do anything: Its fairly common for people to think: Ive hired someone to write my resume/figure out which jobs would be a good fit for me, so I can just kick back and wait to hear from them. Definitely not! The professional you hired is only as good as what you give him/her. You need to be prepared to do a great deal of work to uncover and flesh out your career story. This can be an arduous process a point you didnt think was very important could be a key element in the career professional's opinion, and you you'd have to come up with details to make it a highlighted accomplishment or a key career moment to discuss in your interviews. It will be especially challenging if its been more than a couple of years since your last resume update. Or, if looking at various directions to take, the details of what youve done in your entire career will be helpfulthink beyond your resume. Also, you never want to hand over control of your job search; this is your life and your careerretain the ownership of it! While the person you want to hire has expert advice that will greatly benefit you, the fact remains that you know yourself best. If they suggest something that doesnt resonate with you, communicate your concerns. Really hear the explanations they have for their choices, and decide if that works for you. 2. Expecting it to be a silver bullet: This is more insidious than the first assumption. With this, there is this idea that If I have a professionally written resume or an expert guiding my job search, Ill get a job in no time! While a well-written resume, good answers to common interview questions, and a strategy that targets positions and companies are important parts of a job hunt, they dont magically get you a job. You still need to network, develop rapport, show how you can enhance a companys ability to meet its goals and fit in with the existing team, etc. What it boils down to is this: Even if you have the best resume imaginable and the perfect answers to interview questions, they wont hire you if they dont like you. 3. Not doing enough research to make sure youre hiring the right person: Once youve determined that yes, you want to hire a career professional, you then have the task of deciding who to hire. That can be rather overwhelming. Some criteria to consider are: Credentials/degrees of the professional Their membership in a professional organization Your preference for a practitioner who focuses on one specific aspect of the job hunt (e.g. resume writing, interview preparation) or someone who can work with you through every part of the process Your preference for someone who specializes in a particular field or demographic vs. someone who provides services for an array of clients, fields, and industries And then there is the personality factor how well do you connect with this person who is crafting your professional history and giving you advice? If its a poor fit, youll end up second-guessing everything the person says and does, and likely, rejecting the work done. Not exactly a good use of time and money, is it? Before making a commitment, talk with the career professionals to get a feel for personality and the processes they use. See if they have recommendations and samples of completed, successful work. Ask if its possible to talk with past clients. And, remember to read the contract carefully so you know exactly what the parameters of the agreement are.
